at St. Mary's College Scouts are taught standard scouting skills such as tying knots and first aid techniques. They also learn other scouting skills including handling tools which would be required on camp such as cutlasses (machetes), axes etc. ROWING & KAYAKINGOn the Second and Fourth Saturday or Sunday of each month
from 13:00-16:00 hrs scouts report to the Boathouse, 181 Western Main Road, Cocorite to learn rowing and kayaking (actual date will be decided each month) |
LIFE SAVING & SWIMMINGTuesdays and Wednesdays
14:30-16:00 hrs at St. Mary's College's swimming pool Scouts are taught lifesaving for which they may earn lifesaving badges, including the Bronze Medallion. The Royal Lifesaving Society of England certifies the course. Also at these sessions our qualified lifesavers teach non swimmers to swim all four strokes. The Troop also takes part in swimming competitions CAMPINGCamps are held at the start of Xmas, Easter and July/August holidays.
Apart from basic survival training, scouts also learn how to cook over open fires, how to erect tents and maintain a campsite in proper condition. Scouts also learn to predict tide and weather changes, an essential part of safety at sea. |
SAILINGFridays 15:00-17:00 hrs at T&T Youth Sailing School in Chaguaramas
The school charges $500 per term for sailing lessons. In addition they attend sailing courses at the Sailing School during July/August holidays. Scouts also enjoy the use of the troop's 31 foot Tornado sailboat "R.U.Mental." The boat has a diesel engine, comfortable cabin and a toilet. ALTER SERVERS & LECTORSA number of 1st Trinidad Sea Scouts are Altar Servers and Lectors at the morning Mass in the St Mary's College Chapel and at the Easter and Christmas Masses.
